It’s quiet here. There are protests for a fifth day against police brutality and systemic racism happening in cities all over the country, including the one in which I live, but it’s quiet here at the end of our cul de sac. My heart has been heavy this last month witnessing examples of our collective “failure to human”…to care for the other as much as the self. Unsurprisingly, the virus is not contained. News of large groups of people trading in their cabin fever for a deadly virus over the long Memorial Day weekend was disheartening. It would seem, dear humans, that apathy is almost as deadly as the virus itself.

I’ve been writing about empathy and the human condition in this tiny corner of the internet for almost a decade. Admittedly, it feels at times like I’m speaking into the void. The echo is an empty comfort, but I do it anyway.

Be good humans, stay vigilant and please, please love one another. Even when it seems futile, do it anyway. We’re all we’ve got.
